Sedox Performance has been in the remap industry for over 12 years and offers reliable source of remap files. Sedox Performance develop their own remap software in house, and ensures the quality is up to standard without cutting corners by trying to be the cheapest!

Airtec Astra VXR Intercooler kit

Airtec has released their astra vxr front mount intercooler kit at a very reasonable price, but high quality alternative from cheap Ebay kits & more than capable of doing the same job as the more expensive kits. Below is a range of results we have gathered ourselves with our datalogger as well as the official results provided by airtec themselves, we have also tested a stage 3 astra with a forge intercooler fitted to show you a comparision of what the airtec are capable of.

As you can see, the outlet temp on the airtec and the forge intercooler were fairly similar, in our opinion, it is one of the best intercooler for the money to date. Please note that both the astras with the forge and airtec cooler were at stage 3 tuning, and both testings were done in the same driving condition and roughly the same time of the day.

Just Performance - Airtec Corsa vxr intercooler testing results!

Airtec Corsa vxr intercooler, are they any good?

"Airtec Intercoolers, are they any good?" This is a question that gets asked a lot at Just Performance, but we can understand where it is coming from... The Airtec intercooler compared to the big names such as Forge Motorsport is indeed a lot cheaper. Most of the times, cheap and quality does not come together. So, to answer this question, we have decided to carry out a few tests against different intercoolers available on the market today to give you a comparison of what are the difference in performance between the airtec, forge, universal and standard intercooler.

All of the tests were carried out on the corsa VXRs in the same driving conditions from 0-120mph power run, to ensure the results are as accurate as it can be. See results below:

From our data, both the airtec and forge intercooler achieved very similar results. On the other hand, the outlet temperature on the universal intercooler were very disappointing, the main reason of an uprated intercooler is to cool down the charge temp, turbo cars loves cold air, hence they are much more responsive in winters! But from our data, the universal intercooler were not really up to standard, there are plenty of cheap unversial intercoolers on the market these days, but our advice is, stay away from them..

Picking the right modifications for your car

Shorter stopping distances and less fade are easy to achieve

We are not happy to simply believe the popular opinion that comes along with these products, and strive to personally test and review the products that we stock; ascertaining whether the performance promises are actually achievable in the real world. One such product that we were keen to properly test was an Airtec intercooler. The reviews and tests performed by Airtec and other independent testers showed them as an incredibly well priced product that punched well above its weight, but we still wanted to test it for ourselves.

During the test, the intercooler was run several times with the standard intercooler fit, and then with the Airtec intercooler. We also ran the test with a Forge intercooler to see how Airtec stacked up against a more established product. At every step, the Airtec proved itself to be an incredibly effective intercooler that provided exceptional performance. Installing a Performance Exhaust System

When it comes to tuning a car, one modification that is high on anyone’s list is to replace the standard exhaust system and allow the car to access the power locked up in other upgrades. Installing performance exhaust systems is a job that is easy enough to do at home, and can be attempted by anyone with a decent mechanical knowledge.

In this blog, we have put together a helpful checklist for those that are thinking of changing their exhaust and are unsure on the exact steps to follow.

Things you will need;

Safety equipment – Goggles, safety gloves.
Lifting equipment – Either a jack and axle stands, car ramps or a lift if you have access to one.
Replacement exhaust kit – Check that it comes with gaskets; if not then buy these separate.
Exhaust sealant – Available from any motor shop.
WD40 – The most useful fluid to any mechanic.
Tools – Socket set; screwdrivers should do it, but a saw may be needed if the old exhaust has seized.

How to replace it

Removing the old exhaust

To remove the old exhaust system you will want to start with the manifold (closest to the engine) and work backwards. Usually the manifold can be removed via the engine bay, but it may need loosening and then removing from underneath. Once you have removed the manifold, or at least loosened it, you will need to lift the car off the ground to allow access to the underneath. If you do not have access to a car lift (they can be rented locally) then axle stands or ramps will give you enough clearance. Work your way back from the manifold and remove all parts to the back-box and tailpipe; if any of the bolts or joints have seized then a liberal application of WD40 and force should see them moving.

Installing the new kit

Again, it is wise to start with the manifold and work backwards, but the first step should always be to remove any trace of the old manifold gasket and give the area a clean. Once you have reattached the manifold then it is time to lift the car off the ground and begin to work backwards to the tail pipes. It is important that you seal each section together with exhaust sealant, which will cure with heat and provide a rock hard lasting seal. If the exhaust kit is designed to fit your car then the process of installation is simply the removal process in reverse, and all the parts should fit perfectly and easily. One thing to make sure of is that you are replacing the exhaust hangers in the right places, and that any heat shields are put back into place; as these protect vital parts (such as brake lines) from overheating.

Running it in

Once you have fitted and correctly ensured the torque of all the bolts, and checked that the kit is all in position, it is time to run the exhaust in and make sure that the exhaust sealant is given time to cure and set. Firstly, you will need to start the car and let it idle for around 10 minutes; the heat will start to cure the paste and the seal will be secure. To make sure of a reliable seal it is advised that you don’t drive the car hard or allow it to become too hot for at least 24 hours afterwards.

Once you have run the exhaust in, and made sure that it is all functioning correctly, then you are free to enjoy the improved performance and improved aural soundtrack that your car will provide. O2 spacers, O2 emulator, O2 Adaptors, O2 extenders - Do they really work?

If you have fitted a performance exhaust with a sports cat or decat, you could run the risk of having an EML (engine management light) turning on. This is due to the fact that the o2 sensor is reading an increase in the CO2 readings from the enhanced gas flow, the ECU would identify this as a fault, despite this not being an actual fault, it will put a warning light on the dashboard.

Fitting a O2 spacer helps to solve this problem by spacing out the o2 sensor to the exhaust flow, this allows the o2 sensor to read the Co2 readings at the correct level.

There are varies names to these devices. O2 spacers, O2 emulator, O2 Adaptors, O2 extenders, there is no need to be confused, they all mean the same thing.

A car’s exhaust sound is affected by several factors. The most important factor is of course the engine size (capacity). Generally speaking, the bigger the engine capacity, the louder the exhaust sound, hence why a V8 or even V12 engine would sound louder than a 1.0 engine (Extreme example). Most of the time, a factory fitted exhaust is very restrictive in terms of noise level of the engine, as the main job of the standard exhaust is to reduce noise level and to meet European car laws… But also bare in mind that restricting in noise means restricting in power!

Now, you have a better understanding of what determines how loud your exhaust sound, we are going to show you several ways to increase the sound of your exhaust.

Cut out the silencers
Removing silencers is a cheap and effective way to increase the noise of your exhaust. Most cars have 2 silencers in total, performance vehicles may have more, always remove one silencer at a time and check if the noise level is at desire level.

Installing decat or sports cat
A standard cat (catalytic converter) is an important component in today’s Eco friendly society. How does it work? - As the metal inside the cat heats up, they covert the gases into less harmful substances. The sports cat (sports catalyst) has a much greater flow rate than a standard cat. The sports cat and standard cat are made in the same material, but the sports cat has a finer matrix and smoothness allows a greater exhaust gas flow and deeper exhaust note. A decat pretty much does what it says on the tin, decat means removing the cat completely. There is no restrictions once the cat is removed, allowing greater gas flows, resulting in louder exhaust note and higher performance figures. Please note that sports cat and decats are illegal in some countries, please research the law in your country before making decision on fitting these parts.

Installing a performance exhaust system
Most cars have plenty of room for performance increase. That’s not to say that the cars are poorly made today, but many manufacturers will choose cheaper alternatives when it comes to parts such as an exhaust system. A Performance exhaust will free some of the power of your engine, as these systems are less restrictive, and is more efficient in terms of allowing gases to escape. This means your engine will “breath better” resulting in spent fuel and air exiting the engine faster, which means more fuel and air can be burned to create more power.

A performance exhaust will change the exhaust tone of the vehicle, due to the fact that aftermarket exhaust manufactures produces exhaust with less restrictive silencers. Also, an aftermarket system often has less silencers, which is exactly the same theory we talked in the above section by teaching you to removing silencers manually. But we will explain why a full system is better! Often you will find that standard exhausts are produced using a “crush-bend” technique, this is a cheaper manufacturing method, but it creates a crinkled area in the pipe work which decrease the diameter and slows down the exhaust gases. It is very common for aftermarket manufacturers to use the “mandrel bend” method to produce exhausts. It is a more expensive process, but it creates a smooth pipework, the pipe remains at a constant diameter throughout the bends, which means it’s less restrictive and will free up a lot more power than by just cutting the silencers out of the standard exhausts.

Conclusion
While the cutting out method is a cheaper solution to a louder exhaust system, it would be fine if you are just after noise. But for performance benefits, installing a full aftermarket exhaust system would be the way forward.

Cobra sport's exhausts are made with the mandrel bent method, which means the bends are smooth unlike the traditional crush-bend method, where decreases the diameter of the pipe work and slows down the exhaust gases, this method of manufacturing is less restrictive.

-Cat back system comes with a choice of Resonated (quieter) or Non resonated (louder)
-There are 4 types of turbo back systems available: Sports cat & resonated, Sports cat & non resonated, Decat & resonated, Decat & non resonated
