Performance Exhaust Systems And How They Work
In a recent article, we discussed some of the range of vehicle performance exhaust systems that we stock in detail. The blog documented all the unique features that the exhaust systems boasted, which helps them to facilitate the excellent performance characteristics they can bring to any vehicle.
As an experienced provider of performance exhaust systems, at Just Performance we thought it would be fundamental to follow up this article with an in-depth discussion about how the typical exhaust system works. The exhaust is the final part of the internal combustion system. It is made up of several components including:
The Engine: Since the exhaust pipe joins to the engine, it is therefore regarded as a part of the vehicle’s engine. As gasoline burns to aid the process of internal combustion, waste gases are produced, and it is the exhaust pipe’s responsibility to dispose of all these resultant gases into the atmosphere.
Exhaust Manifold: Once the used gases are ready to leave the engine, they travel via the multiple output points of the exhaust manifold; this merges into one or two pipes. Some also refer to the exhaust manifold as the exhaust header or extractor manifold.
X or Y pipe: Many enhanced performance vehicles will have an X pipe or Y pipe. This usually means that, instead of the exhaust manifold output pipes merging into one pipe, they merge into 2 pipes that work separately, thereby reducing the force of back pressure.
Catalytic Convertor: As the gases pass through from the manifolds and then through the piping, they will reach the catalytic converter. This component’s function is to transform all of the harmful pollutant exhaust fumes into more environmentally friendly emissions.
Muffler: Further down the exhaust pipe is the muffler. This part of the exhaust pipe is comprised of finely tuned tubes that help eliminate the noise produced by the whole combustion process. All the gases will then travel through the exhaust tip or tips, where they are finally released from the vehicle.
There is a lot to be said about exhaust pipes due to their complexity.
