Car maintenance; should I be doing it myself?

Driving can be one of the greatest joys in life, when you get the right car on the right road everything just comes together. Whatever type of car you drive, whether you are a fan of old school hot hatch thrills or open top cruising and everything in between there really is pleasure to be found on the roads. One factor of car ownership that far too many people deny themselves the pleasure of is maintenance; simple things such as minor repairs can be hugely enjoyable and rewarding for those that have a love of all things mechanical. In this blog we have put together a quick guide to a few essential maintenance factors that can easily be attempted by the home mechanic.

Servicing

Modern cars are increasingly hard to service as manufacturers seek to make it so that you have to head straight to your local dealer if the slightest thing goes wrong. If your car is a little older or simpler then servicing can be a simple task that is incredibly enjoyable and keeps your car running at its best. Tasks such as changing the oil, the filters and spark plugs are easily done at home and it can even be a great time to treat your car to some upgraded parts such as a performance air filter or improved spark plugs.

Changing/upgrading brakes

If you have a jack, a set of axle stands and a basic tool kit then you have everything that you need to either repair or even upgrade your cars brakes. As long as you complete each step thoroughly and safely then this is a simple and rewarding task for any home mechanic. By ditching the standard replacement parts and investing in something a with a little more bite such as something from K-Sport Brakes or AP Racing Brakes you can easily make huge improvements to the cars braking performance.

Paintwork repairs

Stone chips and scratches can really detract from the look of your car and can seriously reduce the resale value of the car. Unless you are the proud owner of a custom or a matte paintjob then repairing those annoying scratches and stone chips at home is an easy task that will give you your perfect paintwork back. As it is with brakes though it is imperative that you complete each step of the job perfectly to ensure that you are not in fact doing further damage to the paint.

So if you want to get a little more involved in the maintenance of your car then why not clear out the garage and get your hands dirty this weekend, your car will thank you.
